This formal pose looks to have been taken later the same year as the beach trip, or early the following year. I believe by then that the War had started. Grandma and Grandpa probably had this picture taken "in case anything happened." This is Grandma Mindel, Grandpa Jack, Martin and Ian.
Here is the last picture of the beach series. You can tell the boys had a good time that day.
I think this picture was taken on the same day as the previous one. The note on the back says it's Martin, but I think it's Ian. He's sitting on his father's shoulders, our Grandpa Jack. I love that Grandpa is wearing a suit at the beach. He was always very proper.

When Martin was four, his brother, Ian, was born. Here they are together at the seaside. Based on their ages, I believe this picture was taken shortly before World War Two broke out in Europe. After the war started, trips to the seaside would have been very rare.
Martin as a small boy, circa 1935.
